Recyclable High Barrier Cellulose Materials for Flexible Food Packaging Applications

  • Food barrier flexible packaging is mainly based on non recyclable multilayer plastic structures; Industry demands recyclable alternative solutions aligned with PPWR legislation
  • Paper is an excellent candidate to replace non recyclable flexible packaging as it is renewable & recyclable. Yet, paper has limitations such as poor barrier properties & sealability
  • ITENE has designed a novel technology using sequential applications of barrier coatings to design high barrier multilayer structures, improving its barrier properties, sealability & being 100% recyclable by CEPI methodology

Plastic Replacement with Molded Pulp Packaging: How Legislation & Market Requirements are Shaping Up Demand for Alternatives in Europe - A Specific Case for Single-Serve Beverage Containers

Molded pulp packaging has been on the rise in Europe during last 5 years & this trend continues. There were several major investments in production capacity & several new production machinery concepts on the markets. So, what is fuelling this growth?

This presentation will demonstrate few concrete examples where plastics were replaced by molded pulp due to specific legislative requirements, EPR or other environmental fees making it not only cost-effective but also a performance matching alternative. A specific focus would be made on the opportunities & challenges in plastic replacement in the single-serve beverage packaging e.g. coffee capsules & how producers are approaching it.  Finally an outlook would be provided on how PPWR is going to impact on the demand for molded pulp packaging in future.
